Understanding SEER and SEER2: What They Mean for Your Mini-Split System

1. What Is SEER?

SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is a key metric used to measure the energy efficiency of an HVAC system during an average cooling season. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficiently the system uses electricity to cool your space.

Most mini-split systems on the market today range between 16 and 29 SEER. If you're looking to maximize energy savings and qualify for potential tax credits or rebates, it’s generally recommended to choose a unit with a SEER rating of 18 or higher.

Higher-SEER systems may cost more upfront, but they typically result in lower monthly utility bills and longer-term value through reduced energy consumption.

2. What Changed with SEER2 in 2023?

In 2023, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) implemented an updated standard known as SEER2 to improve how HVAC systems are tested for energy efficiency. This change was made to better reflect how these systems perform under real-world conditions.

Key Differences Between SEER and SEER2:

  • SEER tests used to simulate conditions with low external air pressure (0.1 inches of water).

  • SEER2 tests now simulate more realistic pressure (0.5 inches of water), which is more in line with how HVAC systems operate in actual homes—especially systems that deal with ductwork or restricted airflow.

This means SEER2 ratings provide a more accurate reflection of real performance, especially under typical field conditions. It also helps consumers make better-informed choices when comparing systems.

What It Means for You

If you're shopping for a new mini-split HVAC system, it's important to:

  • Understand both SEER and SEER2 ratings when comparing products

  • Look for systems that meet or exceed minimum federal efficiency standards in your region

  • Consider the long-term cost savings and performance benefits of higher-efficiency systems

At Windsanity Mini Splits, we offer a range of high-efficiency, SEER2-compliant systems that are expertly installed and designed for optimal year-round comfort.
